Best Seven Gems for the Mature Lifter
A common question I get from the mature lifter is how to turn back time, and stay young

– IF YOU ARE YOUNGER THAN 40 YEARS OLD, YOU ARE NOT WISE ENOUGH TO COMPREHEND AND APPLY THIS.
– IN CASE TAKING SELFIES 20 MINUTES A DAY IS PART OF YOUR LIFESTYLE, YOU WILL NOT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING WRITTEN BELOW.
– IF YOU POST PICTURES OF YOUR FOOD ON SOCIAL MEDIA, YOU BRAIN WILL EXPLODE WITHIN 10 SECONDS
1 – Eating Yak or more wild meat
I started to eat Yak in April of 2015. They raise them here locally in Colorado. It is probably now my favorite dopamine increasing food. Since then, I have many friends from overseas from Norway to Siberia come and stay at the house. Their verdict is unanimous: unbelievable taste, and it provides them with greater energy in workouts. Actually, all of them have requested by email to stock up on it for subsequent visits.
2 – Invest in a good body mechanic
This is not new by any means, however because of my traveling schedule I have neglected going to see a “mechanic”. The machine can only go so far without maintenance work. A few months ago I reconnected with Dr. Grove Higgins D.C., who gave me a few “tune-ups”. Instantly, my muscle memory got rid of its Alzheimer’s …
According to an orthopedic surgeon I saw last March in Dubai, my external rotators tendons of my left shoulder had “disappeared”. Well…Dr. Higgins must have “reattached” them as I am gaining strength back every workout, since my first treatment in early November 2015.
What makes a great body mechanic? I like the person to have:
soft tissue skills
understanding of biomechanics
acupuncture & dry needling.
3 – Brain Nutraceuticals for the Mature Lifter
Brooks Kubik wrote an excellent book on normative data of age specific strength goals. I highly recommend it.
Of course, I don’t like to confirm with the data, I like to be at least a generation younger than the age on my passport. So besides regular soft tissue treatment, I have found that gingko biloba, bacopa and gotu kola do wonders to turn the clock back.
I cannot recommend a brand or dosage because there is not a single one high quality that makes it in every country. If you can buy it without going through a functional medicine practitioner, you are probably getting scammed according to the New York Attorney General:
One thing I can tell you is that the product can only be sold through a licensed medical practitioner, and the percentage of active ingredient like bacosides, has to be certified.
I can also tell you which one I use at two caps twice a day:
GINKGO BACOPA – HERB PHARM
I know it works and it does have the right amount of active ingredients. To make it clear, I do not get paid by this company to endorse. I just know it works because how my recall memory and brain speed have gone back in time.
4 – The best website to optimize your productivity
The Tim Ferriss website is the best for that, loads of free info. Okay, I can the gutless keyboard warriors say; “Yeah, it is because you were on his podcast”.
No, I was applying Tim’s stuff before he ever asked to contribute to The Four Hour Body, and the Four Hour Chef.
For the haters, it was a great honor to be a guest at the same level along giants like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Anthony Robbins
To be fair, Tim’s website is the only one I visit once weekly.
5 – Give Hoist machines a try
I always prefer to use free weights. However, sometimes boredom sets in. Or if I just want to train hypertrophy, I love using the Hoist machines. I highly recommend them for anyone who has had orthopedic issues. They are easy on the joints, you always feel that you are in the groove when working with them. My favorite pieces: seated row and standing calf raises
I am not financially involved with them.
6 – Give Prime machines a try
I love the concept of being able to load a specific part of the strength curve. Especially when doing rehab for clients. I have two pieces in my basement gym, just got them. After starting to use them again, the DOMS was out of this world… After the hamstrings machine workout, for the next five days, it felt like the Kendo team tried multiple combinations of bamboo stick hitting on my knee flexors. Ben Pakulski is also a great fan of them, and has many of them in his MI40 gym in Tampa.
Prime is redesigning many of its pieces, and I will be involved in the process.
7 – Choose always the highest quality in the basics. Barbells and Dumbbells are still your best friend
Properly designed free weights are still your primary strength and muscle building tools. The right dumbbells and barbells will always give you the best results.
I like thick handles dumbbells that spin calibrated, and are moron proof. So I designed a dumbbell that I wanted, Simon Watson took on the responsibility to deal with my obsession with detail Now it is the common distinguishing feature of all the top gyms in the World from Shredded Strength in Perth to Transform in Dubai.
Regarding barbells and plates, I have picked Eleiko since when I started coaching at age 17. Bought my first set with the tips I made working as a bus boy in a Japanese restaurant. Been a faithful client since then.
For basic machines, you can’t beat Atlantis, especially when you need great mechanics, service and excellent price/quality ratio. And… they listen. I use them often for clients who need something customized.
I am sponsored by Atlantis, Eleiko and Watson, and I am very proud of it because they stand by their quality
